Dear PhD students and Postdoctoral Fellows & all other interested researchers,
It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I welcome you all to the first ever NANOSMAT SCHOOL.
The idea to set up such a school emerged from the success of NANOSMAT conferences, which have successfully been held around the world since 2005 (see also NANOSMAT Conference website). The NANOSMAT SCHOOL will complement and supplement the NANOSMAT topical conferences, which include as add-on’s: tutorials, workshops, short courses on NANO related topics, Young Scientist Lecture and Poster Competitions.
Together with a number of renowned international lecturers, we have delivered many tutorials and short courses at NANOSMAT conferences since 2005. I can proudly say that these courses were very well attended by NANOSMAT delegates and were very well appreciated too by the attendees (mainly PhD students, Post-Docs and early career stage faculty members).
Also, NANOSMAT has held short courses and workshops where industrial partners have helped to deliver these programmes. The results, from our experience, have been very encouraging and this has led us to launch this one of its kind NANOSMAT SCHOOL. We plan to hold this School each year around the world. We will have high quality international speakers that will contribute to the success of this school, including Nobel Prize Laureates such as Professor Albert Fert, Professor Jean Marie-Lehn, Professor Andre Geim, etc. who are regular plenary speakers at NANOSMAT conferences (For more details click here).
In particular, this school has been set up to provide an interdisciplinary forum to PhD students and Postdocs with a broad understanding of basic physical sciences, engineering and their application to nanoscience and nano- engineering.
The general objectives of the school are to:
- Provide understanding of basic concepts, of structural characterization and property measurements of nanostructured materials and nano-devices;
- Provide the ability for an in-depth analysis and simulation of nanostructured materials and nanodevices;
- Provide ability for manufacturing, processing and synthesis of nanostructured materials and nanodevices;
- Prepare students and postdocs to conduct their own research programme in innovative applications of nanostructured materials and nanodevices.
The School will focus on advances in fundamental theory and applications related to nanostructured materials, i.e. nano-architectures, nano-mechanics, nano-opto and graphene electronics, nano-energy, nano-magnetics, nano-fabrication and nano-assembly including adaptive chemistry and molecular engines, catalysis, nano-medicine and nano-fluidics, nano-sensors and nano-actuators, NEMS/MEMS, and multiscale modelling.
The programme will consist of keynotes, oral- and poster presentations, brainstorm discussions and exercises, visits to local industry and research institutions, as well as social activities. Each year we will also honour one outstanding young researcher (at the PhD or Post Doc level) with the “KROTO MEDAL” (named after the late Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Harold KROTO) for their awardable achievements and contributions made to the field of NANO.
